KPMG Updates Beer Tax Administration Study and Concludes Alcohol Regulatory System Helps American Beer Taxes Get Collected

An updated report on beer tax administration was conducted by  KPMG Tax Managing Director, State and Local Tax Harley Duncan, formerly head of the Federation of Tax Administrators.  In this study KPMG noted a number of excise, sales and other tax rate changes enacted in various states in the past five years, but more importantly reaffirms that “the three-tier system of brewers, distributors and retailers enables tax and beverage control authorities to establish an effective system of third party reporting to monitor product flows through the system and to aid in tax compliance.”    The updated report can be found here.   The 2009 report can be found here.

The transparent and accountable state-based system of alcohol industry regulation stands in stark contrast to countries around the world who lose billions in revenue from alcohol taxes not collected.  A press release announcing the update can be accessed here.
